Tackling the Skills Challenge

Build UK Chief Executive Suzannah Nichol participated in a Ministerial roundtable last week to explore a different approach to skills and training in the sector. With the Government’s commitment to build 1.5 million homes over this Parliament, the discussion hosted by Matthew Pennycook MP (Minister for Housing and Planning, MHCLG) ‐ with the support of the Rt Hon Baroness Smith (Minister for Skills, DfE), Sarah Jones MP(Minister for Industry, DBT and DESNZ) and Sir Stephen Timms(Minister for Social Security and Disability, DWP), as well as the Metro Mayors ‐ covered a range of issues, including improved college provision, the need for long term employment opportunities, and responding to local labour markets. There was clear recognition of the need for change, starting with a joined‐up approach to the various initiatives underway.

Suzannah highlighted the importance of a pipeline of work to give employers confidence to invest in skilled workers and new entrants, as well as the need to set out the Journey from Education to Employment in the industry showing young people the range of opportunities available and the skills and qualifications required.

Latest HSE Accident Statistics

The HSE has published its annual accident statistics for construction covering the period 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024. There were 51 fatal injuries to workers, compared to an annual average of 42 fatalities over the past five years, with over 50% caused by falls from height. The number of specified and over 7‐day injuries was consistent with the previous year (4,050 in 2023/24 compared to 4,038 in 2022/23). The main causes of non‐fatal injuries were falls from height (33%), slips, trips and falls (30%), and struck by a moving object (14%).

The HSE has published guidance on working at height, which is supported by ‘Safety Steps’, a series of guides on safe work at height produced by the Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC). Build UK will be publishing collated accident data for its ‘tier one’ Contractor members in the New Year.
