HMRC VAT
As the Government look to close the ‘tax gap’, HMRC are recruiting 5,000 new officers over the next 5 years, so businesses should be expecting increased scrutiny from HMRC.
With VAT being the second-largest source of government revenue & HMRC estimating that the current ‘VAT gap’ at around £8 billion, it’s important to ask: If you receive a call from HMRC, are you confident that your VAT compliance is robust?

Scam Alert
There is a scam going on which has affected several fencing companies already.
Here’s how it works.
A person who is currently known as Adam Anderson calling on behalf of Thames View Camping (this appears to be a Bona Fida business) phones up and enquires (07404) 320945 YES IT STILL RINGS OUT adamanderson@engineer.com. Turns our the @engineer.com emails are fake / spurious.
He calls back quite quickly to place an order.
He wants to pay by card, nothing unusual here the payment amount is around 5k.
He rings to make payment over the phone and offers a single card make payment – it fails to process.
He therefore pays a payment of £2,500.00 on the provided card – it goes through approved.
He then pays the balance on another card of just under 2.5k – it goes through approved.
He then wants delivery as early as possible to the following address at Thames View Camping, Princess Margaret Rd, Tilbury East, Essex, RM18 8PL.
Delivery is arranged and made within a couple of days of taking payment.
Delivery driver meets with so called Adam Anderson down the driveway to, but outside the gates of Thames View Camping in an adjacent yard and delivery is made.
Several weeks later the card provider emails to say they are making a claw back as the card holders (Mrs Tracy Obrien & Mr Ian Symes) have complained they did not authorise payment, despite the card company authorising the two payments!
Thames View Camping allege they know nothing about the delivery or an Adam Anderson and say it’s a scam – they ‘seem’ plausible.
Result is materials have gone and no payment received.
As an FYI – It would appear that ‘triggers’ are set on credit cards at £ 2.750.00 for a required app verification. Hence the 2.5K increments they made.
We understand that so far around 10 or 11 companies have been caught out with this.
