Changes to UK Steel Tariffs Announced
The Government has confirmed that new UK steel trade measures will come into force on 1 July 2026, introducing significant changes to the way steel imports are managed.
Under the new arrangements, tariff-free steel import quotas will be reduced by 51%, with any imports above these quotas subject to a 50% tariff. The measures apply to steel products that can also be manufactured in the UK and are intended to protect the domestic steel industry from global overcapacity and unfair competition.
Following extensive consultation with industry, the Government has also confirmed that 11 specialist steel product types will be exempt where there is insufficient UK manufacturing capacity. A transitional exemption will also apply to qualifying contracts agreed before 14 March 2026 and imported between 1 July and 30 September 2026, helping businesses already committed to existing supply arrangements.
The changes follow months of engagement between Government and industry bodies, including the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), which has highlighted concerns around the potential impact on construction costs, project delivery and material availability. The Government has confirmed that the new measures will be reviewed after 12 months.
Members who purchase or specify steel products should familiarise themselves with the new arrangements and consider any potential impact on future procurement and project costs.
