🏆 UK Fencing Awards – Judging Day This Week!
This Wednesday marks an exciting milestone on the road to the UK Fencing Industry Awards 2025 – it’s judging day!
Our expert panel of judges, kindly supported by our generous sponsors, will be reviewing all entries and making those all-important decisions about who will be shortlisted for this year’s awards. We’ve received so many high quality entries this year – the judges are going to really have their work cut out!
A huge thank you to our sponsors and judges for giving their time, expertise and support – and of course, the very best of luck to all those who have entered.
We can’t wait to reveal the finalists very soon and celebrate together at Mercedes-Benz World on 13th November.

Late Payments Consultation Response
The Government is consulting on further legislative measures to improve payment practices and make sure small businesses are paid on time as part of its Small Business Plan. Build UK is developing a response and will be holding a meeting on Tuesday 30 September from 9:00am to 10:30am for members to share their views.
The consultation is an opportunity to build on the work that has been undertaken to improve payment performance in the construction sector to date, and key proposals include introducing maximum payment terms of 60 days, giving the Small Business Commissioner powers to impose financial penalties on large businesses that consistently pay late, and either prohibiting the use of retentions or introducing requirements for retention monies to be protected. Build UK believes that any new measures must work holistically within the current legislative framework and that the existing reporting requirements should be effectively enforced to improve transparency for the supply chain and highlight those businesses that pay late.
We would encourage all Build UK members to send a representative to the meeting on 30 September, which will be held on Zoom, and please email us to confirm your attendance.

Recruiting the Next Generation
Build UK is contributing to the Construction Skills Mission Board which has been established by Government with £625 million of funding to train up to 60,000 more skilled construction workers by 2029. With research demonstrating that when employers and apprentices receive support there is a much greater chance of apprentices completing their apprenticeship, we are keen to see a more consistent approach to recruiting, training and retaining apprentices through a national apprenticeship hub, which would bring together the wide range of programmes and initiatives available locally and share best practice.
The new Go Construct Careers platform is designed to connect employers with apprentices by providing a one-stop shop for new entrant opportunities in construction across England, Scotland and Wales. It is ideally located alongside all the new entrant resources on the Go Construct website, and anyone interested in joining the industry can create a profile, upload their CV, and start applying for jobs. All construction employers can advertise their new entrant opportunities free of charge, including apprenticeships, T Level placements and work experience opportunities, by creating a company profile. CITB’s New Entrant Support Team (NEST) offers additional support to employers in-scope to CITB through a matching service, which will connect them with potential candidates for their roles.
Build UK has also proposed that the Misson Board endorses the rollout of the digital skills passport to ensure that both new and existing workers undertaking a construction occupation are able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge elements of competence as required by the building safety regime.
