World Cup winning rugby star to hand out the UK Fencing Awards

The AFI are pleased to announce that world cup winning rugby star Kyran Bracken MBE will be presenting the awards at the awards lunch on the 13th October 2022 at Twickenham, thanks to sponsor Binns Fencing.

Cameron Glanvill, Chairman of the AFI, is looking forward to welcoming Kyran to the awards day: “We are delighted Kyran Bracken has agreed to hand out the AFI Fencing awards at Twickenham, a place he knows well. It will be a great occasion for our industry as we celebrate some fantastic fencing work.”

Kyran’s career has spanned from professional rugby to TV work. Part of the 2003 England World Cup winning squad, he enjoyed a long career with Saracens and was capped 51 times for his country. Finally stopping playing professional rugby in 2006 he was ready for a new challenge on the ice rink – appearing on celebrity contest Dancing on Ice which led to him developing his own touring ice skating show.

Dancing on Ice partnered Kyran with Melanie Lambert and they went on to win the 2007 contest, showing his competitive nature continued, even with a long term ankle injury from a New Zealand match in 1993.

He has also had a career in-font of the camera not just presenting Rugby or skating, but with cameo appearances in “Friends”, taking out David Schwimmer, and opposite Idris Elba in the movie “100 Streets”. Kyran’s Ruck It! podcast showcases his continued rugby knowledge and sense of humour.

Kyran Bracken commented “I am pleased to be asked to present these awards as I know the dedication, toil and determination it takes to run a company of any size. The AFI are right promoting the fencing industry, highlighting the great works and recognising excellence of this sometimes forgotten sector that we all take for granted in everyday life.”

Pete Clark, AFI CEO, said “It’s nice to have a safe pair of hands to give out the awards. It looks like there will be a few laughs at the invitation only event for finalists, as I have heard about Kyran’s quick wit.”
